New Years Resolutions 2018

b5b05aea3ca490efea980086e57237d0

2018 is here, and I have decided to write down my 18 new years resolutions! I feel like there is more power to it when you write your resolutions and goals down (either on paper or on your laptop). So here we go…

Get fit & healthy again

This year, I want to reach my usual weight again. I gained some weight last year (mostly due to stress and over-eating), and I finally want to stop that. In 2018, I am going to eat more healthy and work out as much as I used to when I was 18 and really athletic. This is the number one goal on my list for the next year!

Eat vegan

I want to eat vegan as often as I can! If you are interested in becoming vegan or vegetarian, I would recommend the documentaries Cowspiracy and Forks over Knives!! And even if you aren’t, it’s never bad to get more educated on different kinds of topics, so go watch them!

Meet my friends from Halifax

I would love to meet up with some of my friends from Halifax in Europe! I miss them already, and I want to take the time to see them again & catch up with them.

Stop binge eating

I always over-eat when I am stressed, which can happen quite easily. I want to leave that behing in 2017, and I also want to stop stressing so much.

Make money

After 5 months full of traveling, I want to earn some money with promotion jobs and my internship in summer, which I will probably tell you more about in a different blog post!

Visit Grüner See

I have never been there, and since it is so close I really want to go there in 2018!

Improve my French

I want to improve my French again. I’ve had it for 4 years in high school, and I don’t want to forget what I have learned! So, I want to watch french movies and read a french book this year.

Saying „Yes“ to new experiences

I want to get out of my comfort zone more. I am a person, who loves security and I tend to stick to the things that I know… This year, I want to change that!

Achieve something for my dream career

I want to focus on my goals and my career, and see where the future might take me.

Stand behind what I believe in

And finally, I want to stand behind what I believe in & stand behind my opinions.

Also, I want to you to watch these two speeches:

Oprah at the Golden Globes 2018

Finn Harries TED Talk

They have inspired me so incredibly much, and they are only 10 to 13 minutes long, which is nothing compared to the time your whole day has! Trust me, they are worth watching..

What are your resolutions for this year? Are they similar to mine or do you have totally different ones? I’d love to know!

Christine

Came with nothing, left with everything

Halifax has taught me a lot. The past four months here have shown me who I am as a person, what I want in life and what I want to be like. I finally found the missing puzzle piece that I needed to feel complete again – and it feels so good. I honestly haven’t felt that content with myself since summer 2016. I finally found myself again.

I will never forget this place, nor the people I have met in Halifax. I will always keep the memories in my heart. All the movie nights, the parties, the evenings downtown, the study sessions at library, the classes at gym.

It was a whole life lived in just four months. As sad as I am to leave everything here, I know that the end of this chapter has come and it’s time to move on. I am already excited for the next chapter and what’s about to happen the next few months.

Life is so crazy. And full of surprises.

Let’s see what happens next..

Love, Christine

5 self-care tips

IMG_2264 (2)

Hello, everyone!

As health – physically as well as mentally – is a topic that is very close to my heart, I want to make it part of this project, and dedicate some of my writing to it. Since I live in Canada, I realise how important it is to keep your body fit and energised.

So today, I want to show you little tips on how to develop a healthier lifestyle, even if you don’t have much time:

IMG_2261 (2)IMG_2260 (2)

Wake up with a workout

It sounds hard at first, but since I am working out in the mornings, I feel much more energised and active throughout the rest of the day. Even, if it is just 15 minutes of pilates, or a short walk around the block – it helps me focus on my goals for the day! It improves my concentration, if I have to study later on in the day.

Recently, I started to do yoga before class, which – for me – is the best way to get out of bed in the morning. When it’s dark outside, I turn on my fairy lights, put on music and start my routine. It makes me feel relaxed and happy.

If you want, you can listen to my yoga playlist here. Sometimes I also practice yoga with youtube videos. This one is my favourite channel.

Drink water and green tea

Another important thing is to stay hydrated! I tend to get headaches if I don’t drink enough water, so I always set a reminder on my phone to not forget about it! I drink 8 glasses of water every day, sometimes even more.

In autumn and winter, I also love to drink a lot of tea to keep me warm! Green tea helps me not to snack on too much chocolate, and it also boosts the metabolism. It tastes really good with a slice of lemon.

IMG_2257 (2)IMG_2251 (2)

Have healthy snacks at hand

I love this tip! I always try to snack raw nuts or fruit when I study or just randomly feel like snacking. Since I don’t eat as much chocolate as I used to, my skin has gotten so much better. I try to go for nuts (also a great source of protein!), cranberries and crispbread with nut butter or margarine.

Try to always take some nuts or fruit with you wherever you go (school, work, etc.), in case you get hungry. This is also a great tip for saving money, since you won’t spend it on random snacks.

Take a walk & listen to music

If you feel stressed, tired or sad or simply need a break, listening to music while taking a walk in nature will help a lot! This will definitely boost your mood, as well as your motivation! Aaaand it will keep you fit, if you do it occasionally.

Use an app to remind you

I use the app Fabulous. You can choose which activities you want to be reminded of every day – like eating more fruits, drinking water, taking a walk, or more. It really helps to establish a healthy routine in your life, and you can download it for free in the app store.

I hope this motivates and inspires you to take care of yourself and your body. What do you do to de-stress and stay healthy?

Much love, Christine

Also, shoutout to Dylan, who wanted me to mention him so badly haha

How your thoughts create your reality

Unbenannt

What you think, you attract. What you speak, you create. – @dulceruby (instagram)

I am an optimist. And, I am a big believer that the right, positive mindset, as well as hard work can get you anywhere you want to be. I have already seen it so many times in my own life: As soon as I started to change my negative thoughts into positive ones, I started to see my life more positive, and suddenly so many great things happened and came into my life.

Let’s wind back 4-5 years.. I would say 2012/13 were my greatest low points so far. I have never felt as lonely as back then. I was binge eating unhealthy things every day. I spent days not leaving my bed, without talking to anyone, simply watching hours and hours of TV shows. I gained a lot of weight and felt super uncomfortable in my own skin. I hated myself and my body.

But then everything changed with one book: Treasure Yourself by Miranda Kerr – a book about the power of thoughts for young women. I remember reading it in one go and realizing that I need to stop living like this and finally start doing something with my life!

I started to literally change my thoughts.. Everytime I recognized that I was thinking negatively (about anything) or that I started comparing myself to others, I would rephrase that thought into a positive one. At first, it took me a while to get into this kind of thinking, but I didn’t give up & after a while it became routine, and I started thinking positively without effort and without even noticing it.

As soon as my thought became positive and I became the optimistic person again that I was before, so many great things came into my life: I finally found real friends who are even my best friends now, I lost 15kg weight, I started eating healthy, I became vegetarian, I got very good in school and I regained my ambitions and started to follow my dreams again!

Since then I am 100 per cent sure that thinking positively leads to a positive life, and that your thoughts attract what happens to you. Negative thoughts will attract negativity. Positive thoughts will attract positivity. Like attracts like.

That is also the reason, why the quote above means so much to me.. If you always think or speak negatively about yourself or even others, negative things will happen. However, focusing on the good things about yourself, others and life & being grateful for what you have, that’s the key to real happiness.

I hope that I could inspire at least one of you to make the most out of life and to think positive & be more optimistic!

I hope you all have a great day.

Love, Christine

First Week Abroad

20170830_194818

My first week at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax is officially done! It seems crazy when I think about all of the things that have happened in the past ten days I have been here. It was the first time flying alone, the first time on a different continent, the first time I used a washing machine by myself, the first time at Walmart, and so on.. There has been so much going on – so many new places, people, surroundings.. which is why I thought it was a good idea to write some of it down!

But let’s start at the beginning: All in all, it took me about 19 hours to get from Vienna to the airport Halifax. I had to transit two times (one time in Frankfurt and then again in Toronto), which I was very anxious of in the beginning, since I had never flown alone before! However, everything turned out fine in the end, I met super nice people and managed to carry my heavy luggage without any problems. I finally arrived at 12:34 a.m. in Halifax, where a woman who works at the university kindly picked me up.

The Mount (my university here) didn’t only pick us up, they also had so many events planned for us in the so-called orientation week. It was amazing! Even though it was stressful at some points (every day was loaded with activities), the events were so much fun. For instance, there was an inflatable parcour, a casino night, a show with the mentalist Wayne Hoffman, a ‚Glow Tight & Bright‘-party, etc.

As you can see in the pictures above, we went bowling one evening where we even got to meet the university’s mascot Mounty. I was pretty bad at the game itself, but I enjoyed meeting the other international students from China, Nepal, France, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, India, Great Britain, Ghana, etc. The exchange students here are from all over the world, it’s incredible!

This is the pond which is directly in front of the house I live in, it is such a lovely place! I am staying in one of the ‚Birches‘. Each one has room for 20 students to live in.

Above, you can see the view from the campus. The university is up on a hill and next to the ocean, which is why we have an amazing view from up here! There are even deer living on campus & they don’t shy away from us humans, it is amazing.

We have also already explored downtown Halifax! We have seen the Spring Garden and we were at the waterfront, which was so so nice. I have instantly fallen in love with this place, it is so lively but at the same time quiet and peaceful. Just being able to be by the sea at all times is amazing, I am so grateful for this!

Also, Canadians seem to be the nicest people ever! Everyone here is so welcoming and wants to help you all of the time.

We also took the ferry to the city next to Halifax, Dartmouth. You can see Halifax and the bridge that connects both cities from there.

The thought of living and studying here for the next 3 months just seems so crazy to me, I still can’t believe it! I am incredibly thankful that I have this opportunity and I will try to make as much of it as I can!

If you study abroad or have studied abroad, message me on Instagram or comment here! I love to hear stories of other people about their experiences and travel adventures.

See you soon!

Berlin + Hamburg

A lesson that I have learned on my trip to Germany: Nothing happens as you expect it to & so much can go wrong when you are traveling!

The trip started out perfectly fine. My friend Melanie & I planned to visit our friend Destina in Berlin and spend a day in Hamburg before flying back home. We flew from Bratislava to Berlin-Schönefeld (the airline Ryanair offers flights from Bratislava which are much cheaper than the flights from Vienna). Destina picked us up there and we stayed at the place she rents.

Berlin

On the first evening, we mostly talked to catch up and cooked us some food (we also went grocery shopping which was quite fun – don’t know why but I just love buying groceries and food haha).

On the second day, we spent the whole day strolling around the city. First, we went to  Brandenburg Gate where we sat down in the middle of the street and drank lemonade. It was so much fun – the city and the people there have such a youthful and laid-back vibe. I absolutely loved the atmosphere! Afterwards, we went to the Berlin Cathedral, the Lustgarten, the Mall of Berlin (honestly, the most beautiful mall I’ve ever been to) and Alexanderplatz, which is located right next to the TV tower.

Things to do: Visit Café Einstein – they make delicious coffee (also with soy milk!). Also, visit the Rittersport shop! You can make your own Rittersport chocolate there!! You can choose the chocolate flavour and up to three fillings. I made myself a dark chocolate bar with strawberry and raspberry flakes and caramelized almonds – it was so delicious!

Hamburg

On the third day, we packed our bags and hit the road to Hamburg. The day before, we booked ourselves tickets for the Flixbus and spontaneously found a nice hotel to stay in. The drive was about  3 1/2 hours long. In Hamburg, we stayed at the Pension am Rathaus which is located in the centre of the city. It’s also close to the central bus station where our bus arrived.

We went shopping at the Mönckeberg street (visit the shop Reserved, I just loved the clothes they have there!). Subsequently, we took a long walk by the harbour and the Elbphilharmonie. Everything was so close to our hotel, we didn’t have to use public transport!

What else to do: Go eat at bona’me! The flair of the restaurant is amazing and the food looked really good. Sadly, we didn’t eat there because we were’nt hungry when we found the restaurant, but I can really recommend the lime blossom tea and the Rhubarb Sherbet – they were delicious.

Hamburg was so lovely. I felt so at peace there.. The city, the atmosphere, the people, the buildings, the harbour – I loved everything and I just need to go back someday!

Missed flight & 14-hour train ride

Let’s get to the part now, where everything went wrong haha.. Everything was fine at the beginning, Melanie and I found a great place to stay in Hamburg, we had no problems with the flight, we had so much fun, etc. … We even started to get suspicious – if you would know Melanie or me you’d know that both of us are extremely chaotic people! hahaha .. So we started to think that something just had to go wrong – and well it did.

On our last day, we took the Flixbus from Hamburg to Berlin where our flight would departure. We even booked the early bus just in case something would go wrong & we would still get to the airport on time. Well.. turns out there was a big traffic jam and we got stuck. We would be 2 h late but there was still a slight chance that we would catch our flight. However, then the bus driver announced that we needed to stop at a stopping place, for 45 minutes. We didn’t have wifi, the bus driver didn’t help us when ewe tried to talk to him, we didn’t knew where we were..

Nobody could help us and we had to decide fast what we would do.

In the end, the overall best option was to buy train tickets back home. The worst thing was that the train tickets were quite expensive and Flixbus wouldn’t give us back the money for the bus ride (the bus arrived nearly 4 hours late, so I guess that was the least they could have done..). In addition, it would take us 14 hours more to get home, which was exhausting. Melanie had to go to work the next day either.

When you travel, you really can’t plan something 100%. Everything is possible and so so much can go wrong. The most important thing is to keep cool and laugh about it – after all it could have been waaay worse haha

Furthermore, you never know who you could meet in situations like this. Melanie and I met so many interesting people.. a woman who told me exactly what I needed to hear and an old man who had many fascinatig stories to tell. That made the train ride really worth it in the end.

I believe that everything that happens at some point in our life has a reason. Everything is a lesson to teach you something.

I will never forget this trip. It was everything from relaxing to exciting to adventurous and I had so much fun. I enjoyed the vibes Berlin gave me and fell in love with Hamburg. But I will probably go more into that in my next post.

Did you ever miss a flight or had a travel situation like this? If so, what did you do and how did you feel in that moment? I would love to here your stories.

Much love, Christine

Be brave. Be vivacious. Be anything but normal. Be a sea of magic in a world full of deadened eyes. Be anyone you want to be. But never forget that everything is possible, if you can dream it & if you work for it and hold on to your beliefs. Magic is all around us..*

When it comes to being brave or even being confident, I sometimes really struggle with myself. I am just never really content of how I look like, how much I weigh, how I dress, of what I’m doing in my free time, or what I have achieved..  However, bravery & self-confidence is a trait that I always really admire in other people. I often find myself thinking days & weeks about other people and about how they do it, and how I can achieve to get that kind of confidence.

I like to start with the smallest steps. Some days, I am even a little proud of myself because I made a phone call to a stranger or because I went on a run or I wore a dress of which I thought most people would critize or slept over at a friends house. It seems strange to admit that things like this really scare me & I know that most of these things are day to day activities, but then my anxiety kicks in and it becomes so difficult for me.

I know that people mostly admire things that they wished they had or wished they would be & I guess that is the reason why quotes like the one above really get to me, but also excite me and motivate me a lot. I also know that everything is a process, nothing changes overnight, but I am sure that one day I will become the courageous, self-assured person I am deep down.

The photos were taken in Neusiedl am See at Lake Neusiedl (hence the title), which is near my hometown. It’s a beautiful place, especially at sunset. When you walk through the restaurant Mole West and go to the end of the pier, that’s where my favourite place there is. I wouldn’t recommend to swim in the lake because the water is very shallow and sludgy there, but it is a truly magical place to take photographs.
