5 self-care tips

IMG_2264 (2)

Hello, everyone!

As health – physically as well as mentally – is a topic that is very close to my heart, I want to make it part of this project, and dedicate some of my writing to it. Since I live in Canada, I realise how important it is to keep your body fit and energised.

So today, I want to show you little tips on how to develop a healthier lifestyle, even if you don’t have much time:

IMG_2261 (2)IMG_2260 (2)

Wake up with a workout

It sounds hard at first, but since I am working out in the mornings, I feel much more energised and active throughout the rest of the day. Even, if it is just 15 minutes of pilates, or a short walk around the block – it helps me focus on my goals for the day! It improves my concentration, if I have to study later on in the day.

Recently, I started to do yoga before class, which – for me – is the best way to get out of bed in the morning. When it’s dark outside, I turn on my fairy lights, put on music and start my routine. It makes me feel relaxed and happy.

If you want, you can listen to my yoga playlist here. Sometimes I also practice yoga with youtube videos. This one is my favourite channel.

Drink water and green tea

Another important thing is to stay hydrated! I tend to get headaches if I don’t drink enough water, so I always set a reminder on my phone to not forget about it! I drink 8 glasses of water every day, sometimes even more.

In autumn and winter, I also love to drink a lot of tea to keep me warm! Green tea helps me not to snack on too much chocolate, and it also boosts the metabolism. It tastes really good with a slice of lemon.

IMG_2257 (2)IMG_2251 (2)

Have healthy snacks at hand

I love this tip! I always try to snack raw nuts or fruit when I study or just randomly feel like snacking. Since I don’t eat as much chocolate as I used to, my skin has gotten so much better. I try to go for nuts (also a great source of protein!), cranberries and crispbread with nut butter or margarine.

Try to always take some nuts or fruit with you wherever you go (school, work, etc.), in case you get hungry. This is also a great tip for saving money, since you won’t spend it on random snacks.

Take a walk & listen to music

If you feel stressed, tired or sad or simply need a break, listening to music while taking a walk in nature will help a lot! This will definitely boost your mood, as well as your motivation! Aaaand it will keep you fit, if you do it occasionally.

Use an app to remind you

I use the app Fabulous. You can choose which activities you want to be reminded of every day – like eating more fruits, drinking water, taking a walk, or more. It really helps to establish a healthy routine in your life, and you can download it for free in the app store.

I hope this motivates and inspires you to take care of yourself and your body. What do you do to de-stress and stay healthy?

Much love, Christine

Also, shoutout to Dylan, who wanted me to mention him so badly haha

L.A. Bucket list

20171104_153035-01

Dreams come true, and Picasso was right: Everything you can imagine is real.

2:12 p.m. Next flight: WS1513 from LAX to YYC. As I am writing this, I am waiting in Los Angeles to catch my first flight back to Halifax. I still don’t realise that I am actually sitting here, nor that I have spent the past days in this city.

For those of you who know me better, will probably also know that I have dreamed of this place since I was little. I’ve always wanted to go here… lay on the beach in Venice and walk around the funky, palm-tree-filled streets of L.A. And now I am here. One of my biggest bucket list wishes came true.

IMG-20171105-WA0027-01 (1)

If someone would have told me two years ago that I would be in this exact moment right now, I probably wouldn’t have believed them – studying in Canada and casually visiting my friend Anna in L.A. because she goes to university here, would have sounded like a  dream. But dreams come true, and Picasso was right: Everything you can imagine is real.

These past days, I got the chance to cross three things off of my bucket list which I want to share with you. Maybe you’ll get a little inspired..

✓ Take a walk by the canals in Venice

Take a walk there in the evening! It’s so romantic, and probably no one except you and the residents will be there.

✓ Visit Griffith Park & the observatory

It’s true what everyone says.. this place is magical. I could have stayed up there all night just watching the lights and the skyline. The best time to go is during the week, the observatory is super crowded on the weekends.

IMG-20171105-WA0035-01IMG-20171109-WA0041-01IMG-20171109-WA0014-01

✓ Stick your feet into the Pacific Ocean

It doesn’t matter if you do it in Santa Monica, Venice or Malibu. Walking barefoot in the sand and along the shore instantly makes me feel happy and relaxed.

20171104_151047-0120171104_143601-01IMG-20171106-WA0055-01

After the past days, I don’t want to leave. I feel drawn to L.A. and its atmosphere.. Maybe it’s the sunny summer-weather, or the positivity and open-mindedness of the people. One thing is for sure, this will not be my last time here.

4 things to do in Cape Breton

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Over the thanksgiving weekend, I was invited to my friend Brittany’s home in Cape Breton. We did many things and saw a lot of Canada’s nature on this trip, which is why I wanted to share four of my favourite things to do there:

1. Drive along the Cabot Trail

The Cabot Trail is a drive along the north of the island. The views along this drive are unquestionably mesmorizing, the scenery is just incredible. It felt like a mixture of Ireland and France combined. On one side, you can see the cliffs and the ocean, on the other, there are endless woods painted in green, orange and bright red colours.

Moreover, the small villages you drive through are so lovely. My favourite place was Chéticamp, where you can eat at the restaurant Le Gabriel. Also, don’t miss out on the Gypsum Mines. They turned those mines into lakes, which look incredible as you can see on one of the pictures below.

100 per cent worth driving along.

2. Do the Ceilidh Coastal Trail

Another beautiful trail you can drive along! Again, the scenery is just amazing. I feel so free when I see green hills and the ocean. It always reminds me of the trip I did to Ireland four years ago.

When you drive along this trail, you should definitely check out Christie’s Look-Off, I believe that’s where I took my pictures.

3. Go to a square dance

I guess this one is pretty typical for people who live in Cape Breton. On our stay, we went to not only one but two square dances (my first ones ever), and it was so much fun! Just believe me and try it out, you won’t regret it.

4. Eat pancakes at the Shining Waters Bakery

This bakery in Mabou (btw one of the cutest places I have ever been to) has the best breakfast pancakes EVER. I am very picky when it comes to food, but this little restaurant did not disappoint me. The portions are huge, and the price is really okay. Also try their porridge bread! It may not be on the menu, just ask for it – it tastes amazing!

IMG_20171009_131039_233Processed with VSCO with preset

Whether you try the trails/restaurants that I have recommended or you experience the island on your own, one thing is for sure: Cape Breton is definitely worth visiting! The small villages, as well as the nature are incredibly beautiful & I will certainly come back one day.

How your thoughts create your reality

Unbenannt

What you think, you attract. What you speak, you create. – @dulceruby (instagram)

I am an optimist. And, I am a big believer that the right, positive mindset, as well as hard work can get you anywhere you want to be. I have already seen it so many times in my own life: As soon as I started to change my negative thoughts into positive ones, I started to see my life more positive, and suddenly so many great things happened and came into my life.

Let’s wind back 4-5 years.. I would say 2012/13 were my greatest low points so far. I have never felt as lonely as back then. I was binge eating unhealthy things every day. I spent days not leaving my bed, without talking to anyone, simply watching hours and hours of TV shows. I gained a lot of weight and felt super uncomfortable in my own skin. I hated myself and my body.

But then everything changed with one book: Treasure Yourself by Miranda Kerr – a book about the power of thoughts for young women. I remember reading it in one go and realizing that I need to stop living like this and finally start doing something with my life!

I started to literally change my thoughts.. Everytime I recognized that I was thinking negatively (about anything) or that I started comparing myself to others, I would rephrase that thought into a positive one. At first, it took me a while to get into this kind of thinking, but I didn’t give up & after a while it became routine, and I started thinking positively without effort and without even noticing it.

As soon as my thought became positive and I became the optimistic person again that I was before, so many great things came into my life: I finally found real friends who are even my best friends now, I lost 15kg weight, I started eating healthy, I became vegetarian, I got very good in school and I regained my ambitions and started to follow my dreams again!

Since then I am 100 per cent sure that thinking positively leads to a positive life, and that your thoughts attract what happens to you. Negative thoughts will attract negativity. Positive thoughts will attract positivity. Like attracts like.

That is also the reason, why the quote above means so much to me.. If you always think or speak negatively about yourself or even others, negative things will happen. However, focusing on the good things about yourself, others and life & being grateful for what you have, that’s the key to real happiness.

I hope that I could inspire at least one of you to make the most out of life and to think positive & be more optimistic!

I hope you all have a great day.

Love, Christine

Peggy’s Cove

20170923_134142

It’s already been one whole month since I live here in Canada. The time is flying by so fast, it’s unbelievable. Even though I miss my friends, the life here feels so normal now & I don’t feel homesick at all. This experience has actually shown me that I am more grown-up and independent than I ever would have thought, and that I am ready to move away from Austria (as soon as I get my Bachelor haha).

I feel as if I have already learned so so much here – especially about myself and what I really want in life. Moreover, I finally have the time here to actually work on myself and the person I want to be, which I am really grateful for.

LRM_EXPORT_20170924_140250

All the memories and experiences I made here have taught me something, and I am looking forward to experiencing even more and going on new adventures here! … Like the little roadtrip we took to Peggy’s Cove last weekend.

Peggy’s Cove was lovely. The houses looked so cute, and walking around the big rocks by the lighthouse was incredible. The view from there was mesmorizing – dozens of rocks, the Atlantic ocean … I could sit there all day and just watch the waves as they crash into the waterfront!

After some time, the sun even came out which made the whole place brighten up. This place was exactly what I imagined when I thought of Halifax when choosing my destination for the exchange semester – and I don’t regret it at all! I will never forget this day and this little adventure with our international group here.

What are your thought on an exchange semester & moving to another country? I’d be really interested to know!

Also, I hope you enjoyed this post & my pictures!

Fall Fashion Essentials 2017

Since I didn’t really have the time to go shopping myself yet here in Halifax, I scrolled through different online shops and found some pieces that I just have to get for this autumn. So, in today’s post I want to show you the things that I found and instantly fell in love with! I think the colors are a great fit for this season and that some of the pieces would look really good together.

Light Blue Sweater

As it is getting colder outside – especially here in Canada, I just need a cozy sweater to keep me warm.. And this one from H&M seems perfect for that! I love the light blue color, which will be great for winter time as well.

(If you click on the photos, it leads you to the exactly same piece in each online store.)

Statement Earrings

These earrings with faux pearls from Zara are simply beautiful. As you might know, I love big statement earrings, and especially the ones you can get at Zara at the moment look so so good. I chose these ones for this blog post because they look very chique and elegant with the pearls. Plus, they are a great match to the sweater above!

Faux Suede Trench Coat

This faux suede trench coat from Zara has a beautiful color and is great for layering, especially in autumn when it is sometimes really warm but then it gets super cold again within a few hours.

White Sneakers

You can never go wrong with white sneakers – they are a staple piece in my wardrobe! I really like these ones from H&M because they are all white, which sometimes can be hard to find in stores.

Blue Handbag

This handbag is by Matt & Nat, a company which offers bags made with organic ‚leather‘. I already have a backpack from this brand and the material feels really amazing! This handbag has the perfect size, it is not too small, but it is also not too big! Furthermore, the color is a perfect fit for all of the clothes I have showed you above.

Girlfriend Jeans

I believe, that every woman should get a pair of girlfriend jeans! There look super good on everyone I have seen so far, are comfy and there are so many ways you can style them. I want to invest in this pair of jeans from Reserved, because I love the classy touch the pearls give them with the combination of the ripped part of the jeans. You could wear a nice blouse with these to ‚edge‘ up your look, or you could pair them with a comfy sweater – there are endless possibilities!

Faux Suede Skort

This skort from Zara has a perfect color for autumn and would be perfect paired with the blue sweater above or the black blouse below. Wear them with black tights and boots, and you are ready for fall! Skorts like this one look elegant but are still convenient, because you can actually move in them.

Black Dotted Blouse

This blouse from Zara is just beautiful! The little dots and details make it extraordinary. You can match this with (nearly) all of the things above, or simply style it up with some jewellery. Underneath you could wear a bralette as the one below, then some jeans and sneakers & you are good to go!

Black Bralette

I  actually already own this exact bralette, but I wanted to put it on this list since it matches perfectly with the blouse I just showed you. This bralette by mint&berry is super comfy and looks really great – just like in the picture! I always wear it underneath see-through blouses and shirts & already have gotten many compliments on it. It is reasonably priced, so I would recommend it to anyone who looks for a bralette like this.

That’s it, those are my outfit ideas for this fall. I hope you have enjoyed this blogpost, I love creating things like this and brainstorming outfit ideas!

First Week Abroad

20170830_194818

My first week at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax is officially done! It seems crazy when I think about all of the things that have happened in the past ten days I have been here. It was the first time flying alone, the first time on a different continent, the first time I used a washing machine by myself, the first time at Walmart, and so on.. There has been so much going on – so many new places, people, surroundings.. which is why I thought it was a good idea to write some of it down!

But let’s start at the beginning: All in all, it took me about 19 hours to get from Vienna to the airport Halifax. I had to transit two times (one time in Frankfurt and then again in Toronto), which I was very anxious of in the beginning, since I had never flown alone before! However, everything turned out fine in the end, I met super nice people and managed to carry my heavy luggage without any problems. I finally arrived at 12:34 a.m. in Halifax, where a woman who works at the university kindly picked me up.

The Mount (my university here) didn’t only pick us up, they also had so many events planned for us in the so-called orientation week. It was amazing! Even though it was stressful at some points (every day was loaded with activities), the events were so much fun. For instance, there was an inflatable parcour, a casino night, a show with the mentalist Wayne Hoffman, a ‚Glow Tight & Bright‘-party, etc.

20170831_204220

20170831_204354

As you can see in the pictures above, we went bowling one evening where we even got to meet the university’s mascot Mounty. I was pretty bad at the game itself, but I enjoyed meeting the other international students from China, Nepal, France, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, India, Great Britain, Ghana, etc. The exchange students here are from all over the world, it’s incredible!

20170903_084738

This is the pond which is directly in front of the house I live in, it is such a lovely place! I am staying in one of the ‚Birches‘. Each one has room for 20 students to live in.

20170903_084742

20170903_085316

Above, you can see the view from the campus. The university is up on a hill and next to the ocean, which is why we have an amazing view from up here! There are even deer living on campus & they don’t shy away from us humans, it is amazing.

20170904_152244

We have also already explored downtown Halifax! We have seen the Spring Garden and we were at the waterfront, which was so so nice. I have instantly fallen in love with this place, it is so lively but at the same time quiet and peaceful. Just being able to be by the sea at all times is amazing, I am so grateful for this!

Also, Canadians seem to be the nicest people ever! Everyone here is so welcoming and wants to help you all of the time.

We also took the ferry to the city next to Halifax, Dartmouth. You can see Halifax and the bridge that connects both cities from there.

The thought of living and studying here for the next 3 months just seems so crazy to me, I still can’t believe it! I am incredibly thankful that I have this opportunity and I will try to make as much of it as I can!

If you study abroad or have studied abroad, message me on Instagram or comment here! I love to hear stories of other people about their experiences and travel adventures.

See you soon!
